Shut Up? by Phillip Lee/guest writer

Shut Up?

Christian, our culture is relentlessly telling you to shut up. What are you going to do about it?

Today the temptation to minimize, revise, if not disregard the importance of doctrine, critical to the Christian faith but offensive to the world, has slithered into every crevasse of our culture.

It is one thing to stand in judgment of any number of various behaviors today as morally unacceptable; it is quite another in terms of how to respond. Crystal clear distinction needs to be drawn between men and women struggling with unwanted broken identities and behavior versus individuals actively pursuing, living, and promoting a behavior or identity God has deemed unacceptable and sinful.

Somehow, some way, what has slithered into the Church today is the misguided notion we Christians are to be out and about saving souls. We are not to save souls – we are to disciple them. Saving souls is God’s business and His alone. As Ambassadors for God, I cannot think of any greater way to honor and glorify God than to reproduce, if you will, men and women after His own image.

That said, a huge problem exists within the Church today. Too often, sharing of the Good News has been shrunk to the dimensions of postings on Facebook and within church walls alone.

Evangelism, sharing the Good News, and witnessing for Christ Jesus is not the same as filling pews. Sharing of the Good News can be and should be communicated in a variety of ways – and not necessarily, or even primarily, in church.

Personally, I fail to see how anyone can realistically acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord when choosing to ignore and disregard the command of Jesus Himself to go into all the world and make disciples. Peter reminds us, all Christians are to, “declare the wonderful deeds of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were no people but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10)

Sharing the Gospel, telling people about Jesus, should be as natural to a Christian as breathing. If not, I humbly submit something is terribly, terribly wrong.

It is an undeniable fact the social, cultural, and political fabric of America has been rewoven by a select and misguided few. Indeed, it is correct to state that much of American society is now fully in the grip of political correctness. Any public challenge or expression of disagreement with any aspect of the gay community, the transgender community, or various other communities, will be met with the Christian community being labeled as ‘bashers.’

However, God placed you here for a purpose and He desires to use your obedience in sharing Him to influence and impact not only this generation but generations to come. All He expects of us is obedience. To share openly, unashamedly, lovingly, and without reservation, the greatest news ever announced:

God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life.

God’s love and His plan are available to each and every person and to each, every, and any community.

And, here’s the bottom line: Sharing the Gospel is simply taking the initiative to share Christ Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit, and leaving the results to God.

I am more convinced than ever that the Word of God is still the answer, and that it remains exactly what it’s always claimed to be.

Speak, Act Now, or Forever Regret…

Clearly, we were not, and in many respects still not, prepared for a fight we didn’t see coming.

Same-sex marriage, I-feel-and-therefore-I-am-entitled, men in girl’s bathrooms, the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis, sexual addiction, pornography epidemic, gender confusion, sexual abuse, sexual identity confusion – why has it and why is it taking the larger Body of Christ to recognize, “Yes, we have a crisis!?”

The truth of the matter is the crisis has existed for decades with the downward spiral beginning with the acceptance of welcoming Jesus into our theology but not into our sexuality.

The crisis we have faced and the crisis we continue to face began there, so let’s stop blaming the liberals.

The winds of social change have and continue to blow aimlessly across America with a continued and relentless emphasis being placed upon “tolerance”, which is to be extended to everyone and anyone without limitation and to any and all kinds of sexual expression.

Is there nothing wrong with sex as long as it is consensual? And if there is something wrong, what is it? Does it really come down to a matter of personal taste, of private sentiment, and personal choice? Have we become a nation, a world that gains a sense of purpose and meaning primarily from our sexual desires and behavior?

Today, with many rejecting the Authority of Scripture in matters of faith, practice, and God’s holy boundary lines with regard to sexual expression, clearly what we are witnessing is that without the spiritual, sexuality will always rule and reign supreme.

On every hand, you find those “who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)

While there are those still attempting to make The Bible and Christianity socially and culturally relevant by rewriting and redefining biblical standards, I find tremendous comfort and strength in knowing God’s Word remains steadfast from generation to generation. Therefore, it remains crucial that each and every true faithful follower of Christ Jesus understand and embrace “thus saith the Lord” when it comes to God’s divine intent for human sexuality and other issues of our time.

Ultimately, God is not and will not be mocked, and there is no way anyone can legitimately rewrite or circumvent what God prohibits. Anyone choosing to practice any behavior (in any form or to any degree) that God has clearly defined as sin, cannot glorify God and will eventually downward spiral.

But the good news is “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8) no matter how sinister, dark, rebellious, or disobedient our actions or heart may be.

How well I remember my first reading of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the Kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

What hope and comfort this passage offers. Clearly, according to God, anyone can be an overcomer and cleansed by the blood of Jesus. The Lord Jesus has not changed, nor will He ever alter His Word to accommodate man’s sinful desires, choices, and behaviors.

The reality of an across-the-board crisis of sexual and relational brokenness in the Church and America clearly points to an increasing inability, as the Church and society, to make healthy and moral distinctions. Even those who place a high premium on tolerance are obligated to recognize that matters of various sexual lifestyles now threaten the very values and institutions on which a solid and vital Church and society is built and sustained.

Unfortunately, not every Christian or American is willing or responsive enough to such an obligation. What’s more, they do not want anyone to hold them responsible. Those who have the self-respect to recognize that a person is not reducible to his or her desires or behavior truly exhibit a concern for social justice, personal responsibility, and a true love for this nation which seeks nothing higher than the welfare of people.

When a person’s actions, no matter how sincere, endanger the well-being of the Church and society, criticism and confrontation is both appropriate and necessary. Irresponsible sexual behavior is one of the most destructive realities for the Church and society.

How is it that in choosing to dismiss and disregard a moral compass, we are shocked by the state of our culture? Even so, shocked at what has happened and continues to spread in the Church?

Speaking as someone that was trapped for many years in a behavior and lifestyle, thinking there was no way out, I completely understand how anyone might have difficulty in believing in and receiving God’s forgiveness and restoration.

“But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) God remains rich in mercy and remains willing to deliver anyone. “He is forever our great Sin-bearer and the God who forgives.” (Psalm 99:8)

Jesus Christ is the alternative. He addresses the problem of “man limited to self” and provides the way through which we can find fulfillment in God and His people. By releasing us from the dictates of the past, Jesus frees us to live as new creatures.

God’s grace is sufficient because His strength is made perfect in our weakness. He provides a new identity – the center out of which a true sense of well-being can be achieved and enjoyed. As we draw close to Him, we are enabled to reflect His image in our humanity more and more fully.

America is in need of huge and immediate change. I believe the Church should be out front by showing the way to bring it about. If things continue in this wonderful nation as they have, America and the Church will remain adrift without a moral compass.

There was a time when the Church set societal standards. We cannot and we must not apologize for moral and ethical “holy boundary lines” for living. All faithful followers of Christ Jesus are called to a higher standard.

It is absolutely essential we return to pinning our faith to, and subject “all” our thinking to and doing to, what we read in the Bible.

The 138th Psalm says, “I will praise your name for your loving kindness and your truth, for you have magnified your word about your name.”

Obviously, God thinks highly of His name – but He has magnified His Word even about His name – and, so should we all.

As I watched…

April 9, 2023 WWJWMTD by Steve, the son of John (2SoJ)

As I Watched…

Up early today and watched the moon slide behind the western mountains and looked east to where the sun was coming up but only the dim early morning light was arising.

As I watched the sheep were up on the mountain behind the house eating on the lush green grass that was once again on the hillside due to all the rain and snow. They were standing in the light of the sun, but I could not see the sun yet from the patio of my home.

As I gazed at the mountains around me, I listened to a song, a song I love, and often listen to the lyrics while eating breakfast. A song that humbles me and makes God great, loving, and worthy to be praised.

I looked to the top of the mountains/hills around me wanting to catch a glimpse of the Angels of God standing over me and around me on the hilltops. Humbling myself and am so grateful to Jesus for all He has done for me.

So, I stood there, lifted my hands to heaven, talking to God, and sing toward the sheep above me while my eyes filled with tears—so grateful to God and Jesus’s love for me. “God let me always stand in your presence and worship you all the days of my life!”

The lyrics to the song, Who Am I, filled my heart and humbled me causing my heart to fear the Lord and receive God’s will into my life, into my mind, soul, heart, and strength, to give God alone my praise:

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name, would care to feel my hurt?
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way for my ever-wandering heart?

Not because of who I am, but because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done, but because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean (ocean), a vapor in the wind
Still, You hear me when I’m calling, Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again?
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain and calm the storm in me?

Not because of who I am, but because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done, but because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean (ocean), a vapor in the wind
Still, You hear me when I’m calling, Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am (I am)
I am Yours

Not because of who I am, but because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done, but because of who You are.

I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean (ocean), a vapor in the wind
Still, You hear me when I’m calling, Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
You’ve told me who I am (I am)
I am Yours

I am Yours, I am Yours, oh

Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I fear?
‘Cause I am Yours, I am Yours

2nd Best News

April 7, 2023 WWJWMTD by Steve, the son of John (2SoJ)

The Second-Best News You Will Ever Receive

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2

He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4

Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.

5

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

8

By oppression [1] and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. [2]

9

He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10

Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes [3] his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.

11

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light [of life] [4] and be satisfied [5] ; by his knowledge [6] my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.

12

Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, [7] and he will divide the spoils with the strong, [8] because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

What’s in a Palm Sunday?

April 2, 2023 WWJWMTD by Steve, the son of John (2SoJ)

Encouragement with Warnings

God is always purposeful, full of wisdom, and brings justice through praise. What we call Palm Sunday is in honor and recognition of Jesus riding on a donkey into the City of Jerusalem. This story embodies God’s purpose, praise, judgment, and a true demonstration of His wisdom.

From this event in Jesus’s life, He now will speak of God’s judgment. He had always brought healing and forgiveness before this event but now Jesus must warn the world and specifically Jerusalem of pending judgment.

These warnings of Jesus are even more true today. I would speak only of praise to God (worship) and making oneself clean (repentance) if I was a pastor. I would do less preaching and more incorporating worship into all services. Remember the natural laws of an Olive Tree. An Olive Tree does not produce more quality fruit with more water but with a lack of water and more wind and sunlight. We must have the Holy Spirit moving in and throughout our lives to produce the Fruit of the Spirit.

If there were any words of wisdom that would encourage a Christian and make them prepared for God’s judgment it would be these: one, listen to the Bible being read to you (don’t just read but listen, listen, listen); two, put praise in one’s mouth (not any Christian song but the songs that give praise, honor, and thankfulness to Jesus Christ); and last, have courage willing to stand up for what is right, good, and honest using the laws of God and the teaching of Jesus to guide you along.

Palm Sunday should be an everyday experience not a one-time event for Christians.

Lessons from Proverbs

March 17, 2023 WWJWMTD by Steve, the son of John

Lessons from Proverbs

Knowledge is no good without…

The Book of Proverbs (The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel) has much to say about the interaction between knowledge, understanding, discernment, discretion, and wisdom as these attributes relate to integrity, truthfulness, righteousness, and faithfulness. These qualities are rarely found in today’s businesses, programs, governmental actions, and laws, as well as, in our judicial, medical, and political systems.

But what I am more concerned about is how these attributes work together in Christian lives. It is not taught nor understood how these spiritual attributes depend on and are connected to each other. These qualities cannot nor are meant to work alone but are always connected to each other in their manifestation and operations just like the Fruits and Gifts of the Spirit.

Here is one of the first principles of Proverbs. Knowledge, in fact, any kind of knowledge (natural or spiritual), is no good to anyone by itself alone. Knowledge needs help to be effective, especially spiritual knowledge and Godly truths.

If you get knowledge, you then must get understanding (comprehend its usefulness) and then one must get wisdom (the connection to the purposes and will of God) and this finally brings one to faith (which is your decision, choice, action, or response to the purposes and will of God). So, knowledge is of no spiritual good unless it leads one to faith—the production of God’s perfect will in any given situation or within the life of the believer.

I like to say, “Knowledge just isn’t any good unless and is totally useless without understanding, wisdom, and faith.” So, if it is knowledge you seek, do not forget about understanding, wisdom, and faith. It is only then that you will produce the fruit of knowledge God wants you to have, no use for His Glory.

This is a lesson, some wisdom for your day!

Saying for the Week

God’s wisdom will never fail you, but prophecies and theology will. Why do you ask, because Jesus said they would, and wisdom begins with the ‘fear of the Lord’; this fear saved Jesus Christ from death the Bible says.

Forgivenss is a 2-Way Street

March 5, 2023 WWJWMTD by Steve, the son of John (2SoJ)

Unable to Forgive

I see this often within the Body of Christ—the lack of forgiveness and the healing justice of God. When someone within our group/church/Christian family sins, we did not offer them forgiveness even though they repented and asked for kindness and mercy from the very people that were their friends.

The Body of Christ is self-righteous when they do not give forgiveness freely and willingly. We simply judge others and use the justification—“If I did not sin like that then I am not willing to forgive your sin.” This behavior is a sign of pride and arrogance—"I am better than you” syndrome.

When did Jesus ever say this attitude and behavior was OK. This is religious pride it is ‘hypocrisy’ in action, which the Bible has lots to say about. Hypocrisy will not only keep you out of heaven, but your judgment will be more severe and an embarrassment to Christ.

Anytime you judge without mercy you are in danger of hell and fiery judgment. One cannot receive mercy from God, nor will you find your name in the Book of Life. God forgives us, and we need to offer forgiveness to others quickly and willingly—this is how it works in the Body of Christ.

Question: You know of anyone you broke off a friendship with because you could not forgive their sin(s) and did not offer them a chance to make things, right? If you have then you just kept yourself from receiving forgiveness from Jesus Christ. If you want forgiveness that is fulfilling, life-changing, and that makes you new, inside and out, start forgiving others before you ask forgiveness from God—don’t be a hypocrite which will make you bitter, lonely, and rejected by the Holy Spirit!

A Personal Letter of Wisdom

February 28, 2023 WWJWMTD by Steve, the son of John (2SoJ)

A Personal Letter; Full of Wisdom

Dear Friend,

God says we must love our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48).

It’s hard to do sometimes.

But it can start by telling the truth.

You and I may possibly believe in truth, God’s absolute truth, but how can His truth be honored if we do not speak or act upon it?

As a Christian, I must be obedient and involved in the full purposes of God which will often cause many to be offended. However, being obedient to Jesus never brings dishonor to Him. The only thing that dishonors Him is not obeying Him.

I believe an appropriate question for the Church today regarding homosexuality and related issues is, “Am I being loyal to the notions of Jesus, or loyal to Him?” Are we, His Church, remaining loyal to what He has clearly stated in His Word regarding homosexuality, or are we trying to find compromises with conceptions that never came from Him?

There is no question that homosexuality has become perhaps the most controversial social issue of our time. While that is certainly important, true, and relevant, there is a far greater issue, crisis, and concern at hand.

Frankly, homosexuality should never have been, nor should it now be the primary concern of the Church. What has been unfolding for decades and what continues today, mostly unchallenged, is a rejection of God and a suppression of His truth, His absolute truth, in favor of being wise in our own eyes.

As a result, herein lies the dilemma for many today, “Will I reject God’s absolute truth, the authority of His Word, or will I by the power of the Holy Spirit surrender and conform my life to the Word of God?”

In a time when far too many lives and our culture are being shaped by political correctness and moral cowardice, the time is long overdue for faithful followers of Christ Jesus to stand unwaveringly on God’s absolute truth.

Is it not abundantly clear that we, God’s people, are standing front and center of one of the greatest crossroads the Church has ever faced?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for what is right; a man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice; a man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”

We are treading on terribly treacherous turf.

Ultimately, I am satisfied God’s truth, His absolute truth, will always “be” whether you and I or anyone else believes it or likes it. 1 Corinthians 13:6 says, “Love does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rather rejoices with truth.”

Personally, I cannot come to any other conclusion other than “love, pure, true, undefiled love supports absolute truth.”

Christ-follower, we must challenge our culture with God’s absolute truth because feelings, personal opinions, theories, notions, and ideas have consequences.

Today, many are finding God’s absolute truth much too threatening.

Understandably so, because when you love sin, it is impossible to love God’s absolute truth.
