Personal Theology That Makes the Difference

All the good you do or attempt to do in your life cannot make up for or cancel the immoral or unkind things you do during your lifetime.

It always will be and still is only Jesus that cancels the wrongdoing I have committed.

The Forever Christ

The Forever Jesus

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8.

I have often wondered about this verse; every Christian has their ‘own-take’ on the meaning of “yesterday, today and forever.” I am no exception. I believe we try to read too much into this verse and thereby ‘cloud its meaning’. Simply stated the author of the Book of Hebrews was trying historically to connect the Jesus of the Old Testament with the New Testament. With that in mind, it becomes much easier to understand.

We know by Jesus’s own testimony in the Bible that He refers to Himself before God decided to make the heavens, earth, and all the creation—that He is the ‘Jesus of yesterday’, which we have little knowledge of; then there is the ‘Jesus of today’, which of course is the Jesus that walked this earth and the New Testament is written chiefly about Him; and then there is the ‘Jesus of forever’ that the Bible refers to in only a few places.

The point the author is making is there is One Jesus though we see or understand that there are three distinct roles that Jesus plays: one, from before the creation; two, His life on earth, and the Jesus that will reign forever. These are all the same Jesus. Jesus will/has played three distinct roles—each one is different than the other, but all are still Jesus. This is what makes Jesus so wonderful, powerful, and indeed the Son of God!

We will soon be face to face with the Forever Jesus. He is coming back, and this is when we will see His judgment and His wrath that the Bible so clearly states. He is not a ‘happy-camper’ upon His return, and He is to be feared and with much rejoicing if you are a Christian and have this testimony, “That you please God.”

This verse and my interpretation of this verse does not make Jesus less or different. Rather it states the importance of Jesus, being God’s Son, and His complete and total role in all of God’s purposes and plans. The Forever Jesus is the Jesus spoken of in the Book of Revelation. The Jesus, John the beloved disciple of Jesus did not recognized but fell at His feet as though he was dead. This is the Jesus, whom God the Father said, that He would put all things under his Jesus’s feet. This is the Jesus whom the whole world become afraid of and wants to die instead of facing Jesus at His return. This is the Forever Christ!

Do you really understand the importance of this verse? How it can impact your faith, increase your belief system, and your knowledge of the truth? If you would only believe in the greatness of Christ and respond through faith to all He has done and offers to you, nothing would be impossible for you in Christ.

Yes, the Forever Christ! This is who I worship, believe in and waiting His return.

A Time For Judgement

I received an email from “The Briefing” out of Colorado. This is a wonderful ministry and full of truth. Its ministry is centered around ‘prophetic insight for strategic intercession’. I thought their most recent article, The Briefing 113- A Time For Judgment, is timely and important. I liked how they approached recent events and their reasoning behind their words. Please take a read. You will find #113 on their website, info.

You will find it refreshing and enlightening. Here is the introduction to their message:

Letter From the Editor:

In just a few days, a remnant of believers will gather at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs in response to a divine summons. Many others will join via livestream. I encourage you, if you can, to be here in person. It’s not that often that God calls His people to a solemn assembly, holy to the Lord. Meanwhile, today’s Briefing shares the latest prophetic insights that we are stewarding together in prayer leading up to the event. Even if you are not able to participate on Saturday, the prophetic insights below will help you to enter into what God is doing in this hour. Let’s be His ekklesia through whom these purposes can come into being.

Jacob Wrestled

Jacob was on his way back home from Haran to Canaan, with his family and his herds of cattle. Suddenly, he met a band of angels and knew he was on sacred ground. He named the place "Mahanaim" ("the double encampment of God").

He must have been wanting to meet with God, because he sent all his family and his possessions across the river that night and remained alone at God’s camp, Mahanaim.

Then an unusual man showed up and entered into a struggle with Jacob, a kind of wrestling match that lasted all night long! As the morning drew near, the man "saw that he would not win the match", but he was able to injure Jacob’s hip. "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!" the man cried. Jacob responded, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." Genesis 32:26 NLT

Wow! We interrupt this broadcast with a news bulletin! A Hebrew man just held Almighty God in custody!

Here it is from the Bible: "’What is your name?’ the man asked. He replied, ‘Jacob.’ ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob,’ the man told him. ‘From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won." Genesis 32:27-28 NLT

What a victory! Many people believe that God wants people in this world who have no will of their own. Just the opposite is true. God chooses strong-willed people to do His Will! So do military leaders and businesspeople in this world. Weak-minded "milquetoasts" never get anything done for God or anyone else.

When Jesus said, "Not my will but Yours be done," He was not a spineless, wimpish "Que será será," kind of guy. He waged a bloody struggle in the Garden before submitting His Will to His Father.

Israel (Jacob) had one more request from God. "’Please tell me your name,’ he asked." No answer at that time. It was way too early yet.

I believe Jacob had a "pre-incarnational encounter" with Jesus Christ. Why?

1) He did not reveal His Name. Angelic beings usually identified themselves.

2) After Jacob saw Him, he said, "I have seen God face to face." Genesis 32:30 NLT He even named the place "face of God" (Peniel). "So, we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ." 2 Corinthians 4:6 NLT

3) The Man changed Jacob’s name (which stands for his character) and blessed him. Only God can change someone’s nature. Also, we find in Hebrews that you are always blessed by a better person. "The One who blesses is greater than the one who is blessed." Hebrews 7:7 GNT This Man was greater because He blessed (added something to) Israel!

What if Jacob had let go of God too soon? What if God got away before He blessed him? What if Jacob’s tenacity and his fierce desire to be blessed lessened and he started thinking, "It’s not worth all this. I’m outta here."

Are you being tempted to give up on something you have been holding on to concerning the will of God? Learn from Jacob and don’t quit too soon!

Guest Writer/Otis Davis

A Morning Message from Guest Writer/O.Davis

Thank you, Lord, for Revelation, correct interpretation and application, of your Holy Word.

Ps 23 Wednesday sunrise at Lewisville Lake, Texas, orange lake reflecting the sunrise, looks like orange sherbet ice cream which I want to eat, so smooth and creamy; beside the still water, tiny ripple wavelets, land of green pastures…a picture of God’s rest, making me sit down, be still and know he is God in charge, he is my shepherd, I shall not want, I lack nothing of value I already have everything I need. He refreshes my soul and guides me along the right paths. I am on the right path for my life, no need to fret, worry, compare to others, or even explain. It’s for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; YOUR rod and staff, they comfort me. It’s your rod and staff, not mine; you have everything you need to protect me; you are with me. If I trust you; you will be my light in the darkest valley, guiding me along the right path. Thus, I will fear no evil.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Oil represents the Holy Spirit. The table is for eating your Holy Word, taking it in, digesting it, and letting it become a part of me. It remakes and transforms me into a new creation. My enemies cannot eat it or understand it and are confused and flummoxed. My head is anointed and my cup overflows with the Holy Spirit, because this anointing and overflowing can only happen with him, the Holy Spirit. Let him lead, trust his ways, not mine. I am limited he is not. It is his plan that unfolding. Help me stand and overcome this presence darkness by seeking God first, first in the morning, in each decision large or small, for they all add up to make my life journey.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. What a rich full life journey now and forever. What a promise. Just focus on God, not this world with its lusts, mirages, and empty promises it will all pass away, while I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. My prayers are answered not by my will but by his will which is much higher, filled with light and love.

Israel is an example and a warning for us of what happens when we don’t follow the Lord or Seek him first. They wanted a King like other nations. They disregarded God’s guidance and warnings. They were stiff-necked wanting their own way. They complained, grumbled, whined, murmured, and plotted against God’s appointed leaders. They were a big example of what not to do or be, as an example of what to do and be. This is made clear in their stories of struggle. God’s thoughts and ways are the best. We are taught the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and it’s the most efficient requiring the least effort. But many times, God leads along the longer tougher route, so counterintuitive from our perspective, both could be right but God’s is higher and the best. We just want to accomplish our goal and move on to the next, now. God is building our faith, character, hope, and love, it takes time and experience.

1 Cor 10:1-13 NIV For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. Now, these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry." We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did — and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. We should not test the Lord, as some of them did — and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did — and were killed by the destroying angel. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Experience Must Be Balanced by Caution (1 Cor. 10:1-22). Paul reminded the experienced believers who were strong in the faith that they had better not grow overconfident in their ability to overcome temptation. "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall" (1 Cor 10:12). Paul used the nation of Israel as his example to warn the mature believers that their experience must be balanced by caution. He gave three warnings.

First, he warned that privileges were no guarantee of success (vs. 1-4). Israel had been delivered from Egypt by the power of God, just as the Christian believer has been redeemed from sin. (In 1 Cor 5:7-8, Paul had already related Passover to salvation.) Israel was identified with Moses in their Red Sea "baptism," just as the Corinthians had been identified with Christ in their Christian baptism. Israel ate the manna from heaven and drank the water God provided, just as Christians nourish themselves on the spiritual sustenance God supplies (John 6:63,68; 7:37-39). However, these spiritual privileges did not prevent the Jews from falling into sin.

There are dangers to maturity as well as to immaturity, and one of them is overconfidence. When we think we are strong, we discover that we are weak. The strong believer who eats in the temple may find himself struggling with an enemy who is too strong for him.

Paul did not suggest in 1 Cor 10:4 that an actual rock accompanied the Jews throughout their wilderness journey, though some Jewish rabbis taught this idea. It was a Spiritual rock that supplied what they needed, and that Rock was Christ, Sometimes the water came from a rock (Ex 17:1-7; Num 20:7-11) and at other times from a well (Num 21:16-18). God provided the water.

Paul issued a second warning good beginnings do not guarantee good endings (vs. 5-12). The Jews experienced God’s miracles, and yet they failed when they were tested in the wilderness. Experience must always be balanced with caution, for we never come to the place in our Christian walk where we are free from temptation and potential failure. All of the Jews twenty years old and upward who were rescued from Egypt, except for Joshua and Caleb, died in the wilderness during their years of wandering (Num 14:26 ff).

We can hear some of the "strong" Corinthians asking, "But what does that have to do with us?" Paul then pointed out that the Corinthian church was guilty of the same sins that the Jews committed. Because of their lust for evil things, the Corinthians were guilty of immorality (1 Cor 6), idolatry (1 Cor 8; 10), and murmuring against God (2 Cor 12:20-21). Like the nation of Israel, they were tempting God and just "daring Him" to act.

Paul certainly knew his Old Testament, and his readers would recognize the events referred to. The "lusting" is found in Num 11:4 ff, the idolatry in Ex 32, and the fornication in Num 25. The Israelites often tempted God, but perhaps Num 21:4-6 was the reference Paul had in mind. For their complaining, see Num 14 and 16.

This kind of sin is serious, and God must judge it. Not only did some of these rebels immediately die (see 1 Cor 11:29-31), but those who remained were not permitted to enter the Promised Land. They were saved from Egypt but were not privileged to claim their rich inheritance. Paul was not suggesting that his readers might lose their salvation, but he was afraid that some of them would be "castaways" (1 Cor 9:27), disapproved of God and unable to receive any reward.

I heard about a pastor who gave a series of sermons on "The Sins of the Saints." One member of the church, apparently under conviction, disapproved of the series and told the pastor so. "After all," she said, "sin in the life of a Christian is different from sin in the life of an unsaved person." "Yes, it is," the pastor replied. "It’s worse!"

We must not think that because the Jews were under the Law that their sins were worse than ours and therefore dealt with more severely. Sin in the church today is far more serious, because we have Israel’s example to learn from, and we are living "at the end of the ages." To sin against the Law is one thing, to sin against grace is quite something else.

Paul’s third warning was that God can enable us to overcome temptation if we heed His Word (vs. 13-22). God permits us to be tempted because He knows how much we can take, and He always provides a way to escape if we will trust Him and take advantage of it. The believer who thinks he can stand may fall, but the believer who flees will be able to stand.

Paul had already told his readers to "flee fornication" (1 Cor 6:18); and now his warning is, "Flee from idolatry" (1 Cor 10:14). He explained the reason why: the idol itself is nothing, but it can be used by Satan to lead you into sin. Idolatry is demonic (Deut. 32:17; Ps 106:37). To sit at an idol’s table could mean fellowship ("communion, partakers") with demons. Paul was again enforcing the important doctrine of separation from sin (2 Cor 6:14-7:1).

He used the Lord’s Supper as an illustration. When the believer partakes of the cup and loaf at the Lord’s table, he is, in a spiritual way, having fellowship with the body and blood of Christ. By remembering Christ’s death, the believer enters into communion with the risen Lord. In 1 Cor 10:18, Paul pointed to the temple altar and sacrifices as another illustration of this truth. The application is clear A believer cannot partake of the Lord’s food (the Old Testament sacrifice, the New Testament supper) and the devil’s food (the idol’s table) without exposing himself to danger and provoking the Lord.

"Are we stronger than He?" (1 Cor 10:22) is directed at the strong Christian who was sure he could enjoy his liberty in the pagan temple and not be harmed. "You may be stronger than your weaker brother," Paul intimated, "but you are not stronger than God!" It is dangerous to play with sin and tempt God. (from The Bible Exposition Commentary by Warren W. God laments: “If Only they Would Obey”

Psalm 81:13 (NET)

If only my people would obey me!

If only Israel would keep my commands!

14 Then I would quickly subdue their enemies,

and attack their adversaries.”

Holy Spirit highlights certain verses in every season for every generation. I believe Psalm 81:13 is a shout-out from God’s heart for ours. He wants us to obey Him fully and completely. Yet in the last seven decades, we as the nation of the USA have turned our collective backs on Him and chosen to do things our own way.

No prayer in schools? Sure, that’s fine. And while we’re at it, let’s discredit the Bible too, it’s a bunch of hate speech anyway.

Abortion? It’s only a fetus, it can’t feel any pain anyway. And while we’re at it, let’s give families the option to end the lives of their old family members as well. Is no one there at your elderly care home to visit you? Just end your life, we’ll help you; you have no more contributions to society anyway.

Divorce? Oh sure, you must be happy. Your partner was a jerk anyway. The kids will easily adapt to the new reality. And while you’re at it, make sure you live with your next partner before marriage, it will help you figure out faster if she or he is the right one. But why even bother with marriage, it is such an antiquated idea. You should be able to love anyone or as many people or anything you want.

I want to change my biological gender. That’s fine, whatever you want, we just want you to feel okay with who you really are, (and we want fewer reproductive people too). And while we’re at it, let’s say self-harm and self-cutting are okay too. We’ll even teach you how to hide it from your parents or guardians.

In fact, let’s distract you so much with social media, current events, and bad news that you have no time to think about God, only about yourself.

I wonder sometimes how much we are like the Israelites who lived in past times. They complained on the journey to the promised land and then 40 years in the wilderness because of disobedience to God’s timing because the enemies were so big. Or how about the next generation after entering the promised land; they disobeyed God about how to take over the land and ended up being swept into the popular culture of the residents. Or how about during the time of the Judges; they followed a popular leader until he or she was dead and then they went right back to doing their own thing.

Or how about right before the Babylonians came in and enslaved them; many were doing what was right in their own eyes. Their government was leading them astray. They had cut the anchor to God from their nation and His commandments; they had taken down the sails of responsiveness to the wind, representing the Spirit of God, and were floating aimlessly in the morass of human whim and preference. Or how about after they returned from 70 years in exile? They wanted to follow God but did not know what to do and had little backbone to rebuild God’s temple until Nehemiah came along.

Every leader in the Bible had a shortcoming, what made David stand out was that he was quick to repent, his hunger for righteousness, a worshipful heart for God, and he kept his heart loving towards his people. This verse expresses his longing well:

Psalm 86:11 (NET)

O Lord, teach me how you want me to live.

Then I will obey your commands.

Make me wholeheartedly committed to you.

What made the prophets stand out was their total surrender to God’s commands. For example, saying something when they knew it would make people angry. Or physically doing very uncomfortable things like Ezekiel laying on his sides for over a year. The smaller prophets like the unnamed one that stood up against Jeroboam would have been fine had not the silky words of a cracked old wineskin did not deter him from his mission.

Even Jesus asked us to do things that were very offensive. For example, in John 6:35 (NET) Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty.” But then it gets offensive in verse 53 “Jesus said to them, “I tell you the solemn truth unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me, and I in him.” To be fair, the context was right after Jesus had fed the 5,000+ people and they wanted to make Him king for the wrong reasons—because they could get something out of Him. It seems he was trying to turn them away intentionally.

God doesn’t want us to choose Him because He can do stuff for us. He wants us to choose Him because we love him and will obey his commands. John 14:15 (NET) says “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 16 Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it does not see him or know him. But you know him because he resides with you and will be in you.” Did you notice how with obedience comes the Holy Spirit? Do you notice how the implied in this verse is that the “world” will be offended by Holy Spirit?

What does that mean for you and me? Looking back to Psalm 81:13 (NET) verse

If only my people would obey me!

If only Israel would keep my commands!

14 Then I would quickly subdue their enemies,

and attack their adversaries.”

The United States of America and any nation or person that turns to follow God’s ways in humility and repentance will have their enemies vanquished, God’s provision, and Holy Spirit’s perfect help. But following Holy Spirit will lead you into many clashes with people who are still following their own way as well as people empowered by God’s enemies. Do you want God’s way enough to be willing to be at odds with and sometimes embattled with most people? Perhaps that’s why Jesus’ parable in Matthew 22:1-14 or Luke 14:15-24 of an extremely wealthy man’s invitations to the wedding party ends with “Many are called, but few are chosen,” or as The Message version says, “Many get invited; only a few make it.” Which side are you on?

By leaving out the spiritual, sexuality will always rule and reign supreme.

Make no mistake, the silent mode many have adopted regarding matters of gender, sexuality, and the holy boundary lines regarding sexual expression we are to live within, and which have been well defined by God in His Word, has and continues to constitute aiding and abetting the enemy of our soul.

Is there nothing wrong with sex as long as it is consensual? And if there is something wrong, what is it? Does it really come down to a matter of personal taste, private sentiment, and personal choice? Have we become a nation, a world that gains a sense of purpose and meaning primarily from our sexual desires and behavior?

Today, with many rejecting the Authority of Scripture in matters of faith, practice, and God’s holy boundary lines with regard to sexual expression, clearly what we are witnessing is – without the spiritual, sexuality will always rule and reign supreme.

On every hand, you find those “who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)

With all sorts of opinions consuming the airwaves, media, and the Internet, it appears everything is now up for question, debate, and compromise, sexual expression in particular.

The moral status of America cannot be determined on the basis of population figures. There is no such thing as statistical morality. America’s blind, amoral pursuit of pleasure at any price, and in any form, has indeed perpetuated the social and dark spiritual dynamics that have birthed and inflamed the various forms of sexual perversion.

Does this not constitute “aiding and abetting the enemy?”

While there are those still attempting to make The Bible and Christianity socially and culturally relevant by rewriting and redefining biblical standards, I find tremendous comfort and strength in knowing God’s Word remains steadfast from generation to generation. Therefore, it remains crucial that each and every true faithful follower of Christ Jesus understand and embrace “thus saith the Lord” when it comes to God’s divine intent for human sexuality and a host of other issues of our time.

Ultimately, God is not and will not be mocked, and there is no way anyone can legitimately rewrite or circumvent what God prohibits. Anyone choosing to practice any behavior (in any form or to any degree) that God has clearly defined as sin, cannot glorify God and will eventually downward spiral.

But the good news is “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,” (1 John 1:8) no matter how sinister, dark, rebellious or disobedient our actions or heart may be.

How well I remember my first reading of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the Kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

What hope and comfort this passage gave me. Clearly, according to God, anyone can be an overcomer and cleansed by the blood of Jesus. The Lord Jesus has not changed, nor will He ever alter His Word to accommodate man’s sinful desires, choices, and behaviors.

The reality of an across-the-board crisis of sexual and relational brokenness in America clearly points to an increasing inability, as a society, to make healthy and moral distinctions. Even those who place a high premium on tolerance are obligated to recognize that matters of various sexual lifestyles now threaten the very values and institutions on which a solid and vital society is built and sustained.

I believe we all would do well to ponder the words of Frederick Douglas…

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”

What matters morally should and must be determined on the basis of our best understanding of what constitutes human well-being. Today, more than ever, responsible American citizens who truly care for the greater social good of America are obligated to impose, if not place under the microscope, a moral gaze on their sexual behavior.

Unfortunately, not every American is willing or responsive enough to such an obligation. What’s more, they do not want anyone to hold them responsible. Those who have the self-respect to recognize that a person is not reducible to his or her desires or behavior truly exhibit a concern for social justice, personal responsibility, and a true love for this nation which seeks nothing higher than the welfare of people.

When a person’s actions, no matter how sincere, endanger the well-being of society, criticism and confrontation are both appropriate and necessary. Irresponsible sexual behavior is one of our nation’s most destructive realities.

How is it that in choosing to dismiss and disregard a moral compass, we are shocked by the state of our culture? Even so, shocked at what has happened and continues to spread in the Church?

Speaking as someone that was trapped for many years in a behavior and lifestyle, thinking there was no way out, I completely understand how anyone might have difficulty in believing in and receiving God’s forgiveness and restoration.

“But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) God remains rich in mercy and remains willing to deliver anyone. “He is forever our great Sin-bearer and the God who forgives.” (Psalm 99:8).

Jesus Christ is the alternative. He addresses the problem – man limited to self – and provides the way through which we can find fulfillment in God and His people. By releasing us from the dictates of the past, Jesus frees us to live as new creatures.

God’s grace is sufficient because His strength is made perfect in our weakness. He provides a new identity, the center out of which a true sense of well-being can be achieved and enjoyed. As we draw close to Him, we are enabled to reflect His image in our humanity more and more fully.

America is in need of huge and immediate change. I believe the Church should be out front by showing the way to bring it about. If things continue in this wonderful nation as they have, America and the Church will remain adrift without a moral compass.

There was a time when the Church set societal standards. We cannot and we must not apologize for moral and ethical “holy boundary lines” for living. All faithful followers of Christ Jesus are called to a higher standard.

It is absolutely essential we return to pinning our faith to, and subject “all” our thinking to and doing to, what we read in the Bible. The 138th Psalm says, “I will praise your name for your loving kindness and your truth, for you have magnified your word above your name.”

Obviously, God thinks highly of His name – but He has magnified His Word even above His name – and so should we all.

Where’s the Truth?

Saying for the Week

Truth is only found in a person of integrity, honesty, principled, and of great moral character.

(It is not found in a person who looks good, sounds right, or has the mark of the beast.)

Living in the Holy Spirit

By guest write/Timothy Brinkley

Remembering Bob Breitel

The Holy Spirit is such an amazing helper. In 2004, I was still regularly running early in the morning (now I’m walking instead 😆) and God was stirring my heart to pray more. I asked the Holy Spirit for a prayer partner. Holy Spirit jokingly reminded me that he was a good prayer partner. I said, “I don’t mean to offend you, but it would be great to have a physical person with whom to pray.”

Not more than a week went by when I was running early around 3 am, I noticed a man in his 60s slowly running in the opposite direction. As we passed, he said “Good morning, God bless you.” I was surprised and curious. The next morning it happened again, but this time, I turned around and ran next to him. He was a home church pastor that had just moved to the area, just started a home church, fostered young men with his wife, and was delighted to have me as company. His name was Robert Charles Breitel, but we called him Bob.

Bob and I loved starting our days with Jesus and exercising between 3 and 4 am. This started a weekly tradition of calling each other in the morning to encourage each other to get out there and run and we ended up praying on every run for many different things. God taught us about spiritual gluttony so we wouldn’t just pray for our own families. I told him I was pastor to my wife and children and so he started calling me “Pastor Timotheus.” We prayed for our city, our county, state, nation, nations around the world, and current events. We prayed for people that we knew about who were struggling with health, addictions, unbelief, or loss. We prayed so much together he ended up being in my dreams.

One particular dream stands out. We were hiking up the mountain of God. There were people on the outside of it going down it along water pathways in toboggans and screaming with delight. We found a door to get inside the mountain which it was full of packages, which we realized were gifts for other people. We continued upwards through the caves of packages helping each other climb to higher and higher levels.

Bob had been a serious runner for most of his life, often running over 100 miles a week. I found out later that he had been deeply addicted to alcohol before being saved by Jesus in 1995 when he was 52. His wife Laura said it took him 13 years to get completely free. Over the next 13 years, we regularly ran at least twice a week. By 2018, Bob’s hip deteriorated to the point where it was too painful to run, so he found the recumbent stationary bicycle. He loathed going to doctors and hospitals, so he did not get it checked. I would join him at the nearby gym sometimes, or we would call each other while he bicycled at home, and I walked outdoors. We would encourage each other in the Lord as we talked and prayed. What a gift God gave us in each other.

Bob’s health began to decline after his second bout with COVID-19 around 2021. When his wife Laura called me on the last day in July saying they were going to the emergency room, I knew it was not good because he did everything, he could to avoid hospitals. Then in August 2022, she said that Bob was back home, bedridden, and would like to see me. I took the first opportunity to come see him. I got to talk to him two more times before he passed into Jesus’ house, and I cried when saying my final goodbyes. I asked Laura what time his body died, and guess what she said? She said between 3 and 4 am. I can imagine Bob starting his day running with Jesus to his new heavenly home.

His wife, Laura invited me to be the pastor that gave the message at his family’s memorial. I did my best to honor him, present the Gospel message, and honor God with that message. I know now he is much closer to Jesus than I have ever been and look forward to seeing what he looks like in his heavenly garments and a new body—I wonder if we will be exercising in heaven. If you would like to listen to the 25-minute message I gave, it is linked here. I also have a link here to Bob’s testimony that he shared with the online Christian Youth Chess Team ministry he was involved in.

Since his passing, I feel closer to the Holy Spirit as I reflect on the work that the Holy Spirit has done in my life because of Bob. Thank you, Jesus!

As followers of Jesus, may we all remember that Holy Spirit is always with us to help us in our spiritual development as we get closer to Jesus’ heart for others. We are living in the age of God’s good will towards humanity. He wants us to have life and life more abundantly. If you feel like your spiritual growth has been stunted, a good book that has helped me recently is Andrew Murray’s Absolute Surrender; particularly chapter 7 has helped me understand why the Holy Spirit has not been more effective in my life in the past. Librivox has the whole book for free here.

Timothy Brinkley is a husband, father, teacher, mentor, author, ‘computer whiz’, and most of all a committed, sincere, and real Christian.
