Names of God #5

Names of God, Part 5 (names with more details)

El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)

First seen in Genesis 17:1 – Used 48 times in the Bible (sometimes without El, simply as Shaddai). O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!

El is likely related to the word Elohim and is used in conjunction with other descriptive words to specifically reference a particular characteristic of God. Shaddai derives from the word for a woman’s breast (shad) and literally means “many breasted one.” This denotes God as the provider, supplying, nourishing, and satisfying his people with their needs as a mother would her child. God our sustainer.

Shaddai is also related to the Hebrew word shadad which means to overpower or destroy, referring to God’s absolute power. This describes God as the one who triumphs over every obstacle and all opposition. Used together El Shaddai is usually translated Lord God Almighty. God is our all-powerful and all-sufficient sustainer.

El Olam (The Everlasting God)

First seen in Genesis 21:33 – Used 439 times in the Bible

El is likely related to the word Elohim and is used in conjunction with other descriptive words to specifically reference a particular characteristic of God. Olam means forever, always, continuous existence, perpetual, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, indefinite or unending future, eternity. Used together El Olam means The Everlasting God. He exists beyond time and space. We can take comfort in the fact that God always was, and always will be God. Nothing we can ever face will change that because God is unchangeable.

Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide)

Only occurs once in Genesis 22:14

Jehovah is actually YHWH (see Yahweh above) and means Lord and Master. It is the promised and proper name of God. Jireh means to see or provide. When Isaac asked Abraham where the lamb was for the sacrifice, Abraham replied that the Lord would provide. After God provided the ram for the sacrifice Abraham named that place on Mount Moriah Jehovah Jireh, meaning The Lord Will Provide. God is quietly arranging things behind the scenes so that they will be in just the right place exactly when we need them.

Jehovah Rapha (The Lord Who Heals You)

Occurs only once in Exodus 15:26

Jehovah is actually YHWH (see Yahweh above) and means Lord and Master. It is the promised and proper name of God. Rapha means to heal or make healthful. Together Jehovah Rapha means The Lord Who Heals You. God is the Great Physician who heals his people. This truth in God’s name applies equally to emotional, psychological, and physical healing as well as to nations and individuals alike.

An update-get prepared

January 24@noon, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

A Prophetic Update: Get Prepared

All of us have heard about the ‘big one’ that is coming to California. I believe it will happen sooner rather than later. There are too many signs, scientific predictions, and God’s testimony to ignore such an event taking place in our lifetime.

The world thinks that man is causing the problems we face each year in the environment, but their weather models are not correct. God is the one changing weather patterns and it will only get worse.

The Pacific Rim is having a lot of activity lately. Earthquakes and volcanoes are active everywhere. I suggest that the west coast of America get ready for a little shaking and moving. It is good to be prepared for natural catastrophes. Only a fool is not prepared for the worst and yet hopes for the best. I believe that God wants us prepared and yet remaining in the Hope of our Salvation.

I know for sure that L.A. will no longer exist someday and the San Joaquin Valley will discontinue producing food for the nation. A lot of destruction is coming to the Golden State. In fact, earthquakes will happen so often that people will no longer want to live in CA—it will become like a wasteland.

Do not fear! God’s judgment works both ways. It causes destruction and also brings redemption and salvation. The question is what side are you planning to be on?

I’m prepared. I watch and pray. I take steps to help my family and others to survive. I mourn for the sins of my state and yet call out to God for judgment so all things are placed under the feet of Christ.

I am doing my part and I hope you are too!

Names of God #4 (more details)

January 24, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

Names of God, Part 4 (more details)

God is Elohim. This name means “Strength” or “Power.” He is transcendent, mighty and strong. Elohim is the great name of God, displaying His supreme power, sovereignty, and faithfulness in His covenant relationship with us. Genesis 17:7,8

Elohim (God)

First seen in Genesis 1:1 – Used 2599 times in the Bible

This is the very first name given to God found in the very first verse of Genesis. This name shows that God is the majestic ruler over all. Elohim is actually a plural word and it’s use as the first name of God and sets him high above all other gods. It also foreshadows the later revelation of the triune Godhead – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)

First seen in Genesis 2:4 – Used 6519 times in the Bible

Yahweh is the promised proper name of God. It means Lord and Master. By Jewish tradition, this name is too holy to pronounce or write. Therefore they just wrote four letters without any vowels: YHWH. Jews stopped saying the name altogether in the third century AD. They stopped saying this name because they were afraid of violating the fourth commandment that prohibits misusing or taking the Lord’s name in vain. Therefore, scholars, today don’t know for sure if the original pronunciation was Yahweh or Jehovah.

El Elyon (The Most High God)

First seen in Genesis 14:18 – Used 52 times in the Bible (sometimes without El, simply as Elyon). El is likely related to the word Elohim and is used in conjunction with other descriptive words to specifically reference a particular characteristic of God. Elyon means highest or most high. Used together El Elyon means The Most High God. It refers to the characteristic of God that is above everyone and everything. This name describes his position as sovereign majestic preeminent God.

Adonai (Lord, Master)

First seen in Genesis 15:2 – Used 434 times in the Bible

Because the Jews have a tradition of not pronouncing nor spelling out the promised proper name of God they often would use Adonai instead of YHWH. Adonai means Lord, Master, or Owner. This name emphasizes that God is in charge of his creation and his people, Lord of lords.

Have You Heard?

January 23, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

Have You Heard?

There is a lot going on with God. He seems busy; busier than usual. Whenever God talks with me I try to verify what He is saying. I use Scriptures, past experiences & history, but more often I listen to what God is saying to others. I like witnesses! If God is saying ‘such and such’ to me, is He saying the same thing to someone else?

God was talking to me about fasting last month. I know this is the time of the year people of God fast—they fast for the New Year. Many churches ask their members to fast during January and February. It is good to fast for many different reasons, but the best reason is when God asks us to fast. God is planning something and fasting gets us ready.

This happened to Christ—forty days in the wilderness fasting and being tempted by the Devil—before He started His ministry. I wonder what is coming? I can only guess—the moving of the Holy Spirit, which God has promised to bring to America. I’m excited!

If you check out the World Wide Web, many people and groups are fasting. People are joining together to fast and pray. It is exciting to watch how God is bringing people of all faiths together to fast this year. I am so happy to be a Christian and part of the Body of Christ.

Anyhow, here are some suggestions for fasting. (By the way, 2018 is the 70th birthday of present-day Israel; we need to fast for Israel if for no other reason.)

"Is this not the fast that I have chosen:
To loose the bonds of wickedness,
To undo the heavy burdens,
To let the oppressed go free,
And that you break every yoke?"
(Isaiah 58:6)

1. Pray a lot—fasting and prayer are linked throughout the Bible.

2. Bible—reading the Word of God during meal times. It will give you strength when you fast—that hunger feeling will go away.

3. Be alone—whenever you are not eating (specific times) get off by yourself. Give the time you usually spend on eating to spending that time privately with the Lord.

4. Praise—do not forget to sing a lot when you fast. Strength in the Lord comes through joy & singing makes us joyful!

5. Humility—Do not publicize your fasting process. Be humble yet truthful; let God help you. Fasting is not about you, but about others and God’s will for them.

Names of God #3

January 23, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

Names of God, Part 3

God is wise. God knows and acts with perfect wisdom in all things. He always acts for our good, which is to conform us to Christ. Proverbs 3:19,20

God is faithful. Out of His faithfulness, God honors His covenants and fulfills His promises. Our hope for the future rests upon God’s faithfulness. Psalm 89:1-8

God is wrathful. Unlike human anger, God’s wrath is never capricious, self-indulgent, or irritable. It is the right and necessary reaction to objective moral evil.Nahum 1:2-8

God is full of grace. Grace is God’s good pleasure that moves Him to grant value where it is undeserved and to forgive the debt that cannot be repaid. Ephesians 1:5-8

God is our Comforter. Jesus called the Holy Spirit the “Comforter,” and the apostle Paul writes that the Lord is “the God of all comfort.” 2 Corinthians 1:3,4

God is El-Shaddai. This name means “God Almighty,” the God who is all-sufficient and all bountiful, the source of all blessings. Genesis 49:22-26

God is Father. Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father” (Matthew 6:9), and the Spirit of God taught us to cry, “Abba, Father,” an intimate Aramaic term similar to “Daddy.” The Creator of the universe cares for each one of us as if we were the only child He had. Romans 8:15-17

God is the Church’s head. God the Son, Jesus, is the head of the Church. As the head, the part of the body that sees, hears, thinks, and decides, He gives the orders that the rest of the body lives by. Ephesians 1:22,23

God is our intercessor. Knowing our temptations, God the Son intercedes for us. He opens the doors for us to boldly ask God the Father for mercy. Thus, God is both the initiation and conclusion of true prayer. Hebrews 4:14-16

God is Adonai. This name means “Master” or “Lord.” God, our Adonai, calls all God’s people to acknowledge themselves as His servants, claiming His right to reign as Lord of our lives. 2 Samuel 7:18-20

The Refresh Button

January 22, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

The Refresh Button

Does God refresh? You bet He does! Read these Scriptures:

Psalms “Sing unto the Lord a new song.”

Isaiah “New things I declare, says the Lord.”

Matthew “Kingdom of God—things new an old.”

Galatians “A new person in Christ.”

Revelation “Give you a new name” and “I make all things new.”

I was walking my dogs through the canyon this morning and God said to me, “Ask that I refresh your life”. Often we get complacent or get use to the things of God becoming ordinary or stale. We become boring to the Lord. We are no longer excited about what God has either done for us or placed in our lives. In Christ, this does not have to take place.

There are gifts, callings, God’s grace, His mercy and countless anointings God has given to each of us, yet we allow them to become plain, worn-out, old, spoiled, dry, trite, uninteresting, flat, or dull. We mishandle the things of God if they do not stay new and refreshed in our lives.

It is time to hit the ‘refresh button’ of God’s promises in your life, just like you tell your computer, TV, or smartphone to refresh. It is just that easy. Say, “Hey God refresh my life! Refresh____?___in my life. God make your things new in my life that you have given to me. Keep me fresh and alive in Christ for your glory alone. Yes, make all things new!”

Names of God, #2

January 22, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

Names of God, Part 2

God is transcendent. God is not merely eminent, the highest being. He is transcendent—existing beyond and above the created universe. Psalm 113:4,5

God is just. God is righteous and holy, fair and equitable in all things. We can trust Him to always do what is right. Psalm 75:1-7

God is holy. God’s holiness is not simply our best image of perfection. God is utterly and supremely untainted. His holiness stands apart—unique and incomprehensible. Revelation 4:8-11

God is Jehovah-rophe. This name means “Jehovah heals.” God alone provides the remedy for mankind’s brokenness through His son, Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the physical, moral, and spiritual remedy for all people. Exodus 15:22-26

God is self-sufficient. All things are God’s to give, and he gives all that is given. Everything we give Him was initially given to us by Him. Acts 17:24-28

God is omniscient. This means God is all-knowing. God’s knowledge encompasses every possible piece of information regarding anything that currently exists, existed in the past, or will exist in the future. Psalm 139:1-6

God is omnipresent. God is everywhere—in and around everything, close to everyone. “‘Do not I fill heaven and earth?’ declares the Lord.” Psalm 139:7-12

God is merciful. God’s merciful compassion is never ending and does not run dry. Through His provision in Christ, He took the judgment that was rightfully ours and placed it on His own shoulders. He waits and works now for all people to turn to Him and to live under His justification. Deuteronomy 4:29-31

God is sovereign. God presides over every event, great or small, and He is in control of our lives. He rules all creation with all knowledge and power. 1 Chronicles 29:11-13

God is Jehovah-Nissi. This name means “God our banner.” Under His banner, we go from triumph to triumph and say, “Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57). Exodus 17:8-15

It’s Time!

January 21, 2018 WWJWMTD by Steve the son of John

It’s Upon Us—A Word from the Lord

Zechariah 12:9-13:1 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 10 And I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look on me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12 And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; 13 The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; 14 All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart. In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

God brought these Scriptures to me a couple of years ago. The Holy Spirit reminds me of them at various times in my life. I understand them perfectly and realize their implications not only for Israel but also for each believer.

I have been in this very situation of constant mourning and in deep bitterness with crying. I felt I was at Calvary looking up at Christ as He hung on the cross. I was in overwhelming repentance and sorry for my sin. Not only my sin but also the sin of everyone around me. I was in mourning and so will Israel be in this same situation soon.

My word for each member in the Body of Christ is this—be prepared to mourn like you have never mourned before. Every time you get by yourself you will begin to cry; cry for your sins and the sins of others. You will desire to be by yourself because the need to pray, cry and seek forgiveness will be great in your life.

Hear the word of the Lord:

“The time has arrived, says the Lord! A time of repentance that will cause your knees to become weak and to fall upon your face. It will be a time of great crying and bitterness for your sin needs to be washed away for your time of cleansing has come. This is the Lord’s doing and it will be great in your life.”
