Distracted Resolutions

Distracted Resolutions

The littlest thing can distract most people. We do not like becoming distracted but it happens often. This is how accidents happen and injuries occur. I do not make New Year Resolutions. They seem silly to me since most of us forget them or just ignore them over time. However, not becoming so distracted might be the one I ought to pay attention too unless I get distracted of course.

Here are some definitions for distracted: To cause to turn away for original focus of attention or interest, suffering conflicting emotions, being distraught, or extreme emotional or mental disturbance. (American Heritage Dictionary)

The Bible says, Psalms 12-18: (note verse 15, use of word distracted)

Shall your wonders be known in the dark and your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 13 But to you have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer prevent you. 14 LORD, why cast you off my soul? Why hide you your face from me? 15 I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted.16 Your fierce wrath goes over me; your terrors have cut me off. 17 They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. 18 Lover and friend have you put far from me, and my acquaintance into darkness.” (AKJV)

I like verse twelve’s use of words, “in the land of forgetfulness.” Whenever we become distracted we forget, we lose focus, and we do not see God’s face. Becoming distracted God no longer is in front of us. We lose our way and only darkness fills the void around us. How not to become distracted is the million dollar question? Here are my suggestions:

1. Get into a routine with God and stay there—your confidence in God will grow.

2. Find specific times to pray and read the Bible and stick with it—different times.

3. Have a backup plan because no one is ever 100% in control of the circumstances in one’s life.

4. Do not get emotional or mentally confused if your times with God are shortened.

5. Learn to pray without ceasing—this is different for everyone but your attitude is everything.

6. Learn to talk to God as a friend—try saying, “Hey God what do you think…” or “Good morning Jesus, let’s have a good day, today.”

7. God is into the miraculous so look for Him in the most unusual things or ways of your daily routine. Always look to the Holy Spirit to lead you to Jesus each day.

A New Year’s Resolution, not quite, but a change in my daily routine, yes this will work. Distracted, not so fast! Keeping Jesus nearer to me, that’s my goal!
