Walking on Water, Ain’t the Only Miracle

Character of the Month Series

One’s character depends on not just seeing with our eyes but seeing with our heart. It is with one’s heart and voice that you believe in God for righteousness. Jesus walking on water (Matthew 14:22-33) was not the only miracle; it was everything else that was going on during His walk on water.

Let’s recount the story. 1st Jesus needed to get to the other side of the lake but He had no boat, there was a storm brewing, and He was not going to walk around the lake—too long of a walk. 2nd God wanted His Son on the other side of the lake in the morning. 3rd Walking on water is better than swimming like a fish—this way Jesus could keep praying and interceding with God. 4th Walking on water is not the most significant miracle here, it was the ‘super glue’ on the soles of His sandals that kept Jesus from slipping and sliding on the waves of the storm. 5th Walking on water is easy if you are not afraid of the storm—the waves crashing around you and their strength overpowering you. 6th The ability to call on others (Peter) to come to you on the water in the mist of the storm, and the transfer of supernatural power to others in order to walk with you. 7th The immediate transfer and movement of the fishing boat from the storm to the land on the other side of the lake.

My point is, it is not the walking on the water that is important in the story; it is all the other supernatural events that took place while Jesus was on the water. Our belief that “all things are possible with God” and “having no fear” when it comes to God’s will is what this story is telling me.

One’s character must find its home in the will of God and without fear of the unknown. A person of great character knows only one thing—“What does Jesus want me to do, go and be.” It is this type of character that God is looking to create in our lives.

Real character accepts God’s power in us working His purposes for His glory alone!
