Growing Character in the Busy Person

Character Building for the Month Series

I call this the ‘Ten Minute Schedule’. A person of character should make connecting with Jesus part of your daily routine. This strategy is simple but effective. If you are really busy (most of us are), you might only do this once in your day, but if you can spare the time—three or more times a day and you will begin to grow in the Lord more than you ever thought possible.

The 10-Minute Schedule (dedicated to my friend Stephen P.)

One minute being thankful. Give thanks for your spouse and kids, extended family members, friends, organizations, events that took place and anything else that you are grateful for. Say individual’s names out-loud, be specific and do not fail to give God thanks for who He is and what He has done for you.

Two minutes praying for forgiveness, protection from what you do not see or realize, and deliverance from evil in every form. Remember Chapter 1, 3 & 121 of Psalms. (To be quick to repent and sincere in asking for forgiveness is critical for every believer.) Sin left unchecked is like cancer that continues to eat away at our soul and spirit.

One minute asking God to order your steps and plan your life. Always and I say always expect God to answer your prayers. If there is one thing most Christians fail at it is expecting God to move or reply back to you while you pray. Give God a moment to reply to you—to talk back to you. Expect Him to answer immediately or sometime during your day. God likes to talk so learn His voice when He talks to you.

Three minutes listening to the Bible being read to you. I like CDs because I can rewind or skip verses quickly and/or concentrate on a particular verse. I like it when the Bible is coming into my heart through my ears. My soul responds better to God’s Word when this happens. I learn more, receive more and change more when the Bible is read to me.

Three minutes listen to Christian music. Music that is based in worship and praise. Music that mentions the names of God, specifically Jesus, and focuses on who God is and what He has done. Don’t’ forget to sing-a-long. Your mouth needs to praise God, not just your thoughts.

So try the ‘10-minute schedule’ for a better life with Jesus—you’ll like it!
